Dennis J. Donovan

Dennis J. Donovan is a Principal at WDG Consulting and a recognized expert in corporate location strategy and site selection, with more than 40 years of experience helping organizations make informed decisions about where to locate, expand, consolidate, or relocate business operations. In his role, Donovan leads consulting engagements, develops innovative analytical models and techniques, and advances greater awareness of the corporate site selection profession. His academic foundation includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Economic Geography from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a Master’s Degree in Economic Geography from the University of Rhode Island. He has also earned the Certified Site Selection Consultant Credential.
Donovan specializes in the analytical dimensions of corporate location strategy, including labor market analysis, business operating cost modeling, location scorecard design, corporate footprint analysis, and evaluating the long-term viability of potential locations. His project experience includes serving as lead consultant for LEGO’s U.S. manufacturing plant location, leading more than 15 strategy and site selection projects for ADP, designing a site selection course for a leading corporate real estate organization, and assessing labor market capacity for more than 30 Target distribution centers across the United States. He has also served as a board member of the Site Selectors Guild and received an Education Excellence Award for a corporate site selection course and a Distinguished Service Provider Award for leading a Task Force on Global Location Outlook: Next 10 Years.
Donovan’s interest in site selection began as an undergraduate student, when he became intrigued by the spatial differences among locations and how those differences affect business operations and quality of place. His interest was further developed after meeting a graduate student studying economic geography while working for the Cedar Falls Historical Society. An early field visit to a major Southeastern metropolitan area to evaluate a location for a packaging machinery plant reinforced his interest in the profession. Seeing significant differences among submarkets within a 90-minute radius of downtown demonstrated to him how location decisions require both broad geographic perspective and detailed, on-the-ground investigation.
Beyond his professional work, Donovan maintains strong connections to his academic and local communities. He is an alumnus donor to both the University of Nebraska at Omaha and the University of Rhode Island and contributes to the Salvation Army and St. Jude’s. Outside of consulting, he is an avid gardener and sports fan, enjoys music across genres ranging from rock and country to opera, and particularly enjoys leading trivia quizzes.
